High Anxiety, Made Easy

I am one of the worst patients. I have high anxiety whenever I enter a doctor’s office or the hospital but today my three new friends at Backus Hospital made my pre-operation appointment for knee replacement easy. Pauline, Katy and Jill talked me off the ledge and made each procedure quick and easy. They were cheerful and upbeat. I only wish I could take them with me for the surgery. Thank you for hiring such wonderful human beings.

Compassionate Communication

My husband, Todd, was taken to Hartford Hospital after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke in the thalamus. He spent three weeks in the ICU and step-down unit and four weeks in the IRU. I cannot thank everyone enough for the consistently exceptional care and excellent communication. The staff was amazing, caring and kind and I never felt in the way. When I called to check at night, I never felt like I was a hindrance.

The nurses would fill me in on every detail. Watching his therapists work with him on the IRU — and seeing his progress — was magical. Four months after his stroke, we went to Acadia National Park. Todd hiked 25 miles in 3.5 days, navigating roots, rocks, inclines and declines. You are a blessing to the patients and families who need your services.

Calm and Caring Under Pressure

Elizabeth Quashie (with HHC at Home) has always provided quiet, understanding care to our mother, Regina Lapin but she went way above and beyond the call of duty when there was a fire in the condo next to my mother’s. The alarms went off, smoke started filling the hallway. Elizabeth, calmly so as not to worry my mother, quickly got her out of the condo and to safety. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, but the night was not over. It took many hours for the facility to find an alternative condo and Elizabeth attended and cared for mum for the next five days before they were allowed back into the original condo. During this time, Elizabeth cleaned clothing and linen that had gotten wet. We can never thank Elizabeth enough. She deserves special recognition for her dedication and her heart.

Forever Thankful

From the moment we walked through the doors (at the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Emergency Department), my husband Larry and I were greeted with respect and genuine kindness. When his condition worsened so quickly, the swift action of the team was amazing. In each step of his emergency, we were informed what was being done. Even the doctors, PAs and nurses gave us continual updates. After surgery when his condition and prognosis were poor, the care he received was top notch. Not only was he good hands but the care and support given us was comforting. Saying goodbye to Larry was a peaceful and dignified experience. We are forever thankful to the St. Vincent’s family.
